It’s the corner of Christmas! People are busy preparing for this big event and so are Koreans. Christmas is an important family event in Korea as well but a more exciting holiday for couples. Today, I am excited to tell you about Christmas in Korea 🎄

First of all, how does Christmas get here in South Korea? According to the historical record, it was commenced by Christians and early American missionaries settled down this as a popular holiday in Korean culture. From the 1880s to 1890s, it was a pretty calm and refined event with no alcohol, nothing like anything you have experienced in modern days!

Difference between US and South Korea

In America, Christmas is one of the biggest family holidays, sharing gifts and decorating trees with whole family members. However, in South Korea, the way they celebrate Christmas is rather different by age. It is a crucial family event for parents who have young children. Some fathers disguise themselves as “Santa Claus” and give their young children a gift when they are asleep to let them believe in the existence of Santa! However, the belief is gradually broken since they enroll in an elementary school. After that moment, Christmas became a day of “parents” giving a present to their child similar to children’s day.

For young couples, however, Christmas is more of a romantic holiday. Lovers look forward to having this holiday and plan even a month before to spend the best Christmas. During Christmas, there are full of loving couples in amusement parks, ski resorts, and city streets surrounded by romantic lights.

Also, it is a perfect time to confess one’s feeling to one’s crush or express gratitude to family and friends! How about joining this romantic culture by giving our Advent calendar for those close to your heart?

This is similar to real life. During the Christmas season, most restaurants and cafes embellish their stores with colorful decorations to offer a lovely Christmas vibe to their customers.

Other than restaurants, you can also see sophisticated embellishment in departments in Myeongdong, Gangnam, and many other shopping districts.
