This month’s edition of the bySophie box is all about star skincare ingredients: Collagen, Retinol, and PHA. You’ve heard of them all before, but do you know the specific role each plays in improving your skin condition? Don’t worry, we’re here to sum it up for you!

Collagen

Derived from the Greek word “kolla,” meaning “glue,” collagen is a type of protein that helps in the renewal of cells and firming and moisturizing the skin.

Retinol

A powerful vitamin A derivative that helps with anti-aging, retinol increases cell turnover to create a smoother, youthful complexion. However, if you apply a product with retinol, avoid going into the sunlight, as it makes your skin extra-sensitive.

Bonus: Bakuchiol is a vegan substitute of retinol that offers the same benefits with less skin irritation, making it suitable for daytime use as well!

AHA, BHA, PHA

Poly hydroxy acid, or PHA, is a gentler alternative to its more well-known cousins AHA and BHA. It has a larger molecular structure with antioxidant properties that are helpful for dry, sensitive, and irritated skin that needs moisture replenishment.
